Hans Abrahamsen, born 1952 in Copenhagen, started playing the French horn at school and showed an early talent for composition. He started to study French horn at the Royal Danish Academy of Music, but began composition lessons one year later in 1970/71 with Niels Viggo Bentzon and continued his studies with Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen at the Royal Academy of Music in Arhus. Hans Abrahamsen has also studied with Per Nørgard and György Ligeti. His work is considered part of a musical trend called "New Simplicity" in Denmark as a response to the complex music of the Darmstadt School.

Since 1995 Abrahamsen teaches instrumentation and composition at the Academy of Music in Copenhagen. His composition "Nacht und Trompeten" was commissioned and first performed by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in 1982 under Hans Werner Henze. His latest new composition "Let me tell you" was premiered in December 2013 at the Berlin Philharmony under Andris Nelsons.
