Amsterdam String Trio

In 1984, during renovation of the Bimhuis, Huub van Riel, programmmer of the Bimhuis in Amsterdam invited Ernst Glerum to organize a series of open air concerts at the inner square of the Amsterdam Historical Museum, "Bimhuis on tour". It was a beautiful summer. Glerum took his chance and programmed besides various Dutch prominent jazz bands a new trio: viola, cello & bass. He invited Maurice Horsthuis and Ernst Reijseger to do the concert. He never played with them before, but since they were renowned ICP-players the desire was strong. Already well-positioned in the Amsterdam scene of free speaking musicians, they reluctantly accepted the invitation of the fresh, so far mainly swinging bassplayer. Rehearsals [about 38] were scheduled and a lot of them took place in the attic-loft of Maurice, billiard-room/children-corner/library/composer's-residence in one.

The mix was incredible; in compositions like 'Pontius' or 'Mama' the players of the then still nameless Amsterdam String Trio were overwhelmed with the sound they produced together. A luxurious lunch-break at the Park Hotel would generally cool things off, during which suitable names for this Trio, what it already was, were heavily discussed. This Trio was hot!

At the very day of the concert, the concert had to be cancelled because of heavy rainfall. Up untill this very day this concert never happened. Many others did. The first one was at the renovated Bimhuis, under the name 'Amsterdam String Trio'.
